As with the Sumatran Tiger, this portrait of the Amur tiger is part of my original watercolor painting of three tigers. I really like how this portrait turned out, it shows the piercing eyes of this majestic creature. The Amur tiger had been driven to the brink of extinction through hunting in the 1940’s. Russia then granted the full protection of this subspecies and the numbers have been increasing in the wild. However, they are still in the endangered species category. Nowadays, the main risk for the Amur tiger is habitat loss through human activities (source WWF).
